It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Shirley C. MacKenzie, age 64, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility.
Born in North Sydney, Shirley was the daughter of the late John Philip and Mary Margaret (MacKinnon) Steele.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. Shirley was a stay at home Mom, who was devoted to her husband, children and family. She was a selfless person with a heart of gold, who truly and genuinely cared for others and was always willing to listen to her family and friends. She had a never-fail attitude and inspired others due to her perseverance and strength.
She is survived by her loving children John Philip (Francine) MacKenzie, Fall River, Elizabeth (Jason) Hodder, Howie Center and Mary Sharlene MacKenzie, Calgary, her two grandchildren Daniel and David MacKenzie, her sister Mary Steele Boston, Halifax and brother John Steele, Halifax and also her brother-in-law D.J. MacKenzie, North Sydney.
Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 40 years Daniel Frank MacKenzie in 2008.
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral mass for Shirley will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, at St. Joseph Church with Rev. J.J. MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the N.S. Heart & Stroke Foundation.
