It is with overflowing love and tears in our hearts that we say goodbye to our loving Mother and Nanny who passed away Sunday evening, Nov. 13, 2011, at the Northside General Hospital at the tender age of 97, surrounded by her loving family. Mel, as most of her friends knew her by was the lasting surviving member of her immediate family.
Born in Tide Head, N.B., she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Roseanne Roy. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines.
Mel and two of her sisters, Nellie and Eva, moved to Sydney Mines at a very young age and began housekeeping work where eventually she met the love of her life, her late husband Joseph ‘Joey’ Tobin.
The legacy she leaves behind are her children who she adored; daughters, Lorna Cann, Carolynn Groves; her son, Joe Tobin (Junior); her son-in-law, Francis (Mugsy) Groves and her daughter-in-law, Isabel Rahey-Tobin. Mel had seven beautiful grandchildren, Louis (Ester) Cann, Joe Cann, Wendy (Rannie) Boyd, Jody (Tracy) Groves, Jason (Jen) Groves and Fay Tobin. The family would like to thank the staff at the Northside Guest Home where Mel resided the past couple of months for their care and support during her stay. We, the family, would also like to thank the Northside General Hospital 2 West for their concern, care and well-being of our mother and nanny. The Northside Homemakers, especially Ann Marie Stewart, for her professionalism and her seamstress work, which Mel requested from her. Thank you to Rene Boyd (RN) great-granddaughter, whose care, love and professional opinion was well respected within the family. Finally, a very special thank you to Gary Nicholson, for his humor, and many old songs that made the days more enjoyable for our Mother and Nanny.
