Born in Stellarton, Alex was always proud of his Asphalt roots, he was a son of the late Hugh and Ethel (Cameron) MacKenzie of Stellarton.
In his early years he worked in the Albion Mine in Stellarton and later, moved to Halifax where he became a lineman for Nova Scotia Power. He enjoyed skating, baseball, fastball, and bowled with the Main Street Bowling League. He loved hockey, and you could always find him at the rink cheering on his grandsons and his Trenton Junior B Scotian's. One of his greatest loves was to go dancing with his sweetheart every Saturday night and what dancers they were! He had great enthusiasm for life. In retirement he enjoyed puttering in his garage doing carpentry, electrical work, and spending time at his camp. His life was filled with much love and laughter from his family and his many friends. He enjoyed his time sitting with friends having a coffee, and always had a joke to share.
