MOWCHENKO
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of EDNA THEODORA MOWCHENKO, age 81 on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 in her own home with her loving husband Alexander and her family by her side. Edna was born August 11, 1928 at Mossbank, Saskatchewan, the oldest child to Theodore and Emily (Heymer) Haraldson. She was raised on a farm near Mossbank and started school there. In 1939 her family moved to the Kinloch area. She first worked in Kelvington in 1946 and then at SAN in Saskatoon. From there she continued working as a nurse’s aide in Swift Current, Assiniboia and Port Arthur, Ontario. She married the love of her life on November 22, 1952 in Port Arthur. They returned to farm near Ardill, Saskatchewan and there raised four loving children. In 1966, in addition to the farm, Edna and Alex built a home in Moose Jaw. As well as being a dedicated housewife, hard working farm wife and caring mother, she worked, over the years, for Home Care, CanaDays, Extendicare and Ruth’s Variety Shop. She encouraged her children to participate in many activities which included swimming, music, school teams and choir. Edna always enjoyed sewing, knitting and gardening and when the children all moved from home she became an avid quilter. She loved when all the family would come home for holidays and special occasions. Some of her favorite travels were her holiday to England and visiting eldest son Jack in California. She truly enjoyed time spent in her sewing room plus any fabric store, quilting bee or quilt show. She was a member for many years of Grandview United Church quilting group and the Qurazy Quilters. She was also a founding member of Moose Jaw Prairie Hearts Quilting Guild. Edna, through all these organizations, had many treasured friends and in her final days, she wished her many friends “Happy Sewing”. Edna is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Alexander, children: Jack, Blair (Laura), Mark (Judy) and Carolyn Stang (Frank); grandchildren: Monty (Patty), Micky, Sarina, Brendan, Janine and Daniel; great-grandchild, Claire; siblings Fyrne Hanson (Lyle) and Ted Haraldson (Jessie), brother-in-law Tony Fedyk, as well as numerous Mowchenko in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents Emily and Theodore Haraldson, her sister, Margaret Fedyk and Jack’s partner Patricia Cousins. The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. in the W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Linda Owens will officiate. Private family memorialization will take place at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society, 61B Ross St. W., Moose Jaw, S6H 2M2 or to Grandview United Church, 722 – 10th Ave. S.W., Moose Jaw, S6H 7R1. In living memory of Edna, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register book at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).
