It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Russell Gillard, 88, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Jonathan and Maria (Forsey) Gillard.
George was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney. When he was a younger man he was a coal miner in Sydney Mines, and later sailed on the Great Lake boats until his retirement.
George is survived by his wife, Caroline ‘Carrie’ (Hillier) Gillard, North Sydney; sons, George Gillard Jr., New Waterford, Calvin Gillard, North Sydney, Wayne Gillard, Sydney Mines, James (Anne) Gillard, Rosemere, Que.; daughters, Beatrice (David) Billard, Ottawa, Sandra Gillard Sydney; sisters, Ethel Gillard and Eileen Green, both of Barrie, Ont.; grandchildren, Christopher (Tanya) Billard, Sydney Mines, Sheldon Billard, Ottawa, Jolene Gillard, Sydney Mines, Joshua and Simon Gillard, Rosemere, Que.; great-grandchildren, Emily and Rylee Billard; and by several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, George was predeceased by a brother, Charlie Gillard, sisters, Edna White, Jean Green, Marie Parsons and Phoebe Gillard.
The family would like to thank Palliative Care, the nursing staff at the Northside General Hospital, Dr. Peter Poulos, Dr. Bill MacDonald, the VON and the Northside Homemakers for their care and support.
Visitation for George will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, 3 p.m. from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, VON , or the Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton.
