Joseph ‘Joe’ Martell, 86, of Willow Street, Sydney, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, in the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Joe was the son of the late Arthur and Elizabeth (Sampson) Martell from Ashby Road. He was a longtime member of St. Theresa’s parish. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Joe worked as a crane operator at the Sydney Steel plant for over 40 years. Joining the Merchant Marines at the age of 16, Joe served until the end of the Second World War.
Joe is survived by his wife of 57 years, Delores (Sampson); children, JoAnn (Wayne) MacKay, Halifax, Robert (Nauldine) Martell, Virginia, U.S.A., Joey (Lorraine and her daughter Lisa) Martell, Sydney, and Kelly (David) Smith, Howie Centre. ‘DoDo’ will be especially missed by his precious grandchildren, Andrew, Emily, Natalie and Andre and great-grandchildren, Olivia and Mya.
Joe was predeceased by his sisters, Hazel Martell, Della Moore, Mabel Taylor, Julie Bowser and Theresa MacDonald.
Retiring from the Sydney Steel Plant in 1984, Joe was never at a loss for something to keep him busy. He was always building or fixing something around the neighbourhood or at home. Joe also loved travelling to Wreck Cove for a day of fishing with his buddy the late Tom Murphy.
A celebration of Joe’s life was held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011. Interment at a later date.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Anne Frances D’Intino and the staff at the An Cala Palliative Care unit for making Joe’s short stay very peaceful. We would also like to thank the nursing staff of the ER and 4B of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, 3 South, Glace Bay General Hospital, Taigh Na Mara and New Dawn care givers. The family would like to extend our gratitude to Dr. Danuta Kajetanowicz for the great care she gave our father. She was always able to put a smile on Dad’s face.
