HAY: Ian Edward Hay passed away November 28, 2011 at the Palliser Care Centre where he resided since January 2011. Ian was born March 15,1925 on the farm at Duncairn, SK. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends. Ian is survived by Heather (Tom) Taylor of Innisfail, Alberta; Isla (Ray) Wheeler of Swift Current, grandson Keegan Wheeler of Swift Current, great grandson Keenan of Edmonton, AB; Rohdy (Donna) of Medicine Hat, Alberta grandson Zachary Hay and granddaughter Jennifer Hay, both of Medicine Hat: a sister Margaret Hay of Swift Current; sister-in-law Lorna Earl and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by loving wife Orpha (Earl), parents George and Jane Hay, infant sister, sister Mary Campbell, Allan Hay and grandson Chris Wheeler; mother and father-in-law Royce and Susan Earl, brothers-in-law Leslie Salter, Vern Campbell, Alvah Earl, Lee Earl and Murray Earl. sisters-in-law, Eddie Hay, Alice Earl and Merle Earl and a nephew Clinton Earl.
Ian was born and raised on the family farm in Duncairn area, attended Wilhelmina school to grade 8 and then to the W.A. Beattie Collegate, Swift Current, SK. After school he worked as a labourer building the Duncairn Dam and worked on the family farm, until he joined the army in 1943. After the war he worked in Swift Current where he met the love of his life and married Orpha Earl in July of 1948. Shortly after they moved to the family farm and farmed until 1964 when they moved to Webb operating the Webb store and post office. In 1967 they moved their family to Swift Current where Ian was part owner and operator of South West Equipment until he retired in 1977. Throughout his life he was a great volunteer to many boards such as School Board, R.M. of Webb, City Council, Curling Club, Golf Club, Shriners, Kiwanis, Masons and Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56. He always had time to look after his elderly aunts and uncles, children and grand children. Ian made many friends over his lifetime and will be remembered for his sharp wit, love of fun, good food, good friendships and his strong opinions. He enjoyed his winter vacations to Hawaii and later Arizona plus many other destinations. Some of his hobbies included playing fast ball, hunting, boating, curling, golf, wood working, early morning coffee with his friends and playing rummy. A Memorial Service was held at the Grace United Church, Swift Current, SK, Friday December 2, 2011 at 2 P.M., with Lay Assistant Barbara Wiebe officiating. A eulogy was presented by a nephew Terry Salter and readings by a granddaughter Jennifer Hay. An Honor Guard was formed by Members of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Legion Last Rites were observed. The Last Post was sounded by Dick Warren the Lament presented by Piper Neil McCrie.
