Peters, James Edward - 74, Halifax, passed away November 5, 2009 in Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. Born April 22, 1935 in Bridgetown, NS, he was the son of the late Alton Peters and Eunice (Owen) Jordan. He lived most of his early life in Bridgetown and the Annapolis Valley. After finishing high school, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (RCHA), which took him to South Korea in the last year of the Korean Conflict. Returning from there, he was stationed in Debert, where in Truro, he began to court the woman that would become his wife. On October 25, 1957, he married Viola Katherine (Smithers/Borden) Peters who had just finished business school in Halifax. That year, they were posted to C.F.B. Oromocto, NB. After much work in the fields of CFB Gagetown, he was posted to Delinghoffen, Germany where his wife joined him three months later. While in Germany, James and his wife were able to experience the cultures of Europe, vacationing in Germany, France, Italy and many other countries. James was also a member of the 3 RCHA Band which spread Canadian good will over much of the European continent. The family left Germany in 1964 and went to C.F.B. Winnipeg, MB, where James continued to serve his country. In 1970, he was posted to C.F.B Shilo, MB, where he would finish out his military career and raise two sons. James retired honourably from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1984 after serving his country for 32 years. He and his wife then returned to Truro, where much of his wife’s family resided. After taking a year to rejuvenate, he felt the need to serve further and joined the Corps of Commissionaires, giving another 10 years of service until he retired for good in 1995. He is survived by his sons, Bradley, Toronto; Aaron, Halifax; grandchildren, Jacob, Branden, Nevaeh, Christian; nieces, Sharon Ross, Rosiland Flint; nephew, David Ross. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm with a Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26 Tribute Service at 7 pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street; funeral service on Thursday at 2:00 pm in Zion United Baptist Church, 454 Prince Street with Pastor Brian Johnston officiating.
