RAMAGE, Joseph Howieson
1919 - 2009
With great sorrow, we announce the sudden passing of Joseph (Joe) Ramage on November 9, 2009, at the Mayfair Care Centre in Calgary, Alberta. Joe was born April 3, 1919 in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of Alexander and Nellie Ramage. He grew up in Edinburgh and in 1939, he enlisted in the RAF. It was while undergoing flight training in Moose Jaw in 1940 that he met the love of his life, Margaret Machan, whom he married in 1949. After the war, Joe worked as a salesman in the liquor trade and eventually operated a successful pub in Pumpherston, Scotland. In 1958, Joe, Peggy, and their two children moved to Saskatchewan. In the years before his retirement, Joe was part owner of a fur store, worked as an insurance salesman, and finally, as an auditor with the WCB. Joe was devoted to his family and particularly enjoyed the annual Machan Family reunion in Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan. In 1998, he and Peggy moved to Airdrie, Alberta to be closer to his grandchildren. Joe loved to travel and during his retirement, he visited Western Europe, Britain, Bermuda, and Mexico. Joe is lovingly remembered by his wife of sixty years, Margaret, his daughter Norma and her husband Jim Wilson, son Ian and his wife Barbara, and his two grandchildren Colin and Gillian. He is also fondly remembered by the extended Machan family in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Joe was predeceased by his parents, brothers George and Alexander, and sisters Martha, Anne, Nana, and Janet. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson Society of Southern Alberta, 102-5636 Burbank Crescent SE, Calgary AB T2H 1Z6. A memorial service will be held at Pierson’s Garden of Peace Chapel (16 Avenue & Garden Road NE, Calgary) on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. with a graveside service in Findlater, Saskatchewan at a later date.
