It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Raymond Walker announce his passing on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, with his family by his side.
Born in Sydney Mines, Dec. 1, 1923, he was the son of the late Harry and Esther (Jones) Walker. He was an adherent of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. Raymond was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served in the Royal Canadian Navy from November 1940 to July 1945, and was involved in campaigns in Sicily, Dieppe, France, Germany and North Africa. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8, Sydney Mines.
Following the war, he worked at Princess Colliery until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking and bird watching. Many thanks go out to his Legion buddies for their thoughtfulness and kindness over the years.
He is survived by daughters, Veronica (Pat) Murphy, Comox, B.C., Linda (Ray) Whyte, Almonte, Ont., Pat (Clint) Lettice, Melissa (Darrell) Jardine; and son, Bob (Lois) Walker, all of Sydney Mines. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Raymond was predeceased by his wife, Betty (Halford) in 1992, sisters, Jessie Peddle, Rose Teed, Ann Gordon and brothers, Harry and Bill.
Visitation for Raymond Walker will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Thursday, Nov. 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service celebrating his life will take place Friday at 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church, Queen Street, Sydney Mines, with the Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating. The burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
