Bernard McCarthy

McCARTHY, BERNARD - It is with great sadness that the family of Bernard Addison McCarthy of Grand Falls, NB, announce his sudden passing on December 19, 2011 at the age of 64. Bernard was born at Grand Falls on November 8, 1947, and he was the beloved son of the late Leoma and Helen (McGrath) McCarthy. In the early 1960s, Bernard was not able to complete his high school education because of a mental condition known as bipolar. He underwent treatment at a number of hospitals. However, when able, he worked on his parents potato/cattle farm and was lovingly cared for by them and his siblings. When his parents died at an elderly age, Bernard entered Special Care Homes in Grand Falls and Saint-André where he was lovingly cared for. He also enjoyed attending Horizon Centre, Saint-André, where he got along well with the staff and students. However, Bernard had another side that made him so well liked. Bernard was often said to be the "heart" of our family. He was very sociable and enjoyed people he met while walking which seemed to be a great comfort for him. Bernard was also a very caring person who was also very considerate of the less fortunate. He also had great faith in Our Lord and one of his most common sayings when he heard anyone was sick or depressed was; "I will pray for you." Bernard was the youngest of a family of six. He will be dearly missed and always loved by his sister Charlene Pinette (Peter) of Caribou, Maine; his brothers Farrell (Edna) of Miramichi, NB; Cyril (Anna) of Grand Falls, NB and Vincent of Toronto. He is also survived by his aunts; Margaret McCarthy and Lena McCarthy and a number of cousins, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Arnold (June 2010) and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
