LeBLANC, David S. - Age 79, of Yarmouth, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 28 in the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Yarmouth, March 13, 1932, he was the son of the late Maurice and Annie (Muise) LeBlanc. Dave started his working career with the Yarmouth Hospital, then Motor Mart before beginning his lengthy career of over thirty years with the Department of Transportation at the Yarmouth Airport as Maintenance Supervisor. He retired from the civil service at the age of 59 and became curator of the Firefighter Museum of Nova Scotia. In his youth, Dave excelled at sports playing rugby, baseball (Yarmouth Kiwanis Juniors) and (Y’s Men and Jets) basketball, competing provincially and regionally. Dave exemplified community leadership through his volunteer work as a firefighter beginning with St. George Company where he attained the position of Captain. He became Fire Chief in 1974, at the time the youngest man ever elected or appointed to that position. Shortly thereafter, the companies were brought together under one roof, to form the Yarmouth Fire Department. He attended many conferences, training courses and played host to the Maritime Fire Chief’s convention in 1974 and again in the late 80’s retiring from his position shortly after. Dave was also very active in St. Ambrose Cathedral as a choir member, Eucharistic minister and he served on the parish council. He also spent his time as a volunteer on the Agricultural Society as a board member for many years. He enjoyed spending any spare time hunting and fishing and inspired this love of the outdoors in his children and grandchildren. Together with his wife of 53 years, the late M. Evangeline (Surette), he instilled integrity, values and commitment into his eight children. He will be deeply missed by his children Constance (Rev. Deacon Donald) Boudreau of Greenwood; Alan (Carolyn) of Yarmouth; Michael (Gisele) of Yarmouth; Peter (Heather) of Kentville, NS; Patrick (Donna), of Yarmouth; Joanne Wallace of Wedgeport; Richard, of Yarmouth and Clare (Blair) Northcott, of Saint John, NB, and his fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Rene of Chicoutimi, QC , Robert (Helen), Ina (Eric) Warner, Pauline (Paul) O’Connell, Marjorie (Terrance) Chetwynd all of Yarmouth. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, M. Evangeline (Surette), son-in-law Gary Wallace; infant brother George; his sisters, Susan Barry and Barbara Muise. Special thanks to Dr. Tarakji, Linda and Bobby Comeau, and the staff of the New Beginnings for their care and for giving us the quality time with Dad over the past five years. Visitation was held Friday, December 30 from 7-9 p.m., prayers at 8 p.m., both at H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth.
