Ethel (Billard) MacMillan passed away peacefully in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, on Nov. 19, 2009.
Born in Rose Blanch, N.L., on Nov. 3, 1917, the daughter of the late Samuel and Harriet Billard.
Ethel graduated from the Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing in 1940. She was an active member of their alumnae association for many years and served in all offices of same while living in Glace Bay. She remained a very interested member until her death. Ethel did post-graduate studies at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and received a diploma in operating room technique and management, following which she worked as an operating room supervisor at the Glace Bay General Hospital.
Ethel married Donald MacMillan on July 5, 1943. After their children were grown, she attended Dalhousie University where she earned a diploma in public health nursing. She then worked for many years at Sears Health Centre in Halifax. Ethel was an active member of the ladies auxiliary of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia for over 35 years. She also enjoyed many years of playing bridge with her friends.
Ethel is survived by her husband of 66 years, Donald MacMillan; son, Scott (Anne); daughter, Heather; granddaughters, Angela (Aldo) Giordani and Jill MacMillan; great-grandsons, Nicholas, Jeremy, Mitchell and Tyler.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Albert Billard, MD.
A memorial service will be held in T.K. Barnard Funeral Home, Bedford, at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009. A family burial in Memorial Gardens, Sydney, will follow at a later date.
