Robert Strachan ‘R.S.’ MacLeod, 87, South Haven, passed away peacefully at Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, on Jan. 5, 2012.
Born on Nov. 8, 1924, South Haven, he was the son of Murdock Robert and Catherine (MacFarlane) MacLeod. He attended the one room school in South Haven and high school in Baddeck.
At the age of 17, he joined the RCAF. During Second World War he served in England with the RAF, flying in the Halifax bombers as a rear gunner. His crew made 33 successful flights over Europe.
One of the highlights of his retirement years was meeting up with all but one of his RAF crew for several happy reunions.
In 1947, he was offered employment with the newly formed Department of Fisheries, spending his career out of the Baddeck office. During his years in fisheries, he spent a number of winters monitoring the seal hunt activities aboard the sealing boats. He had many stories of his adventures aboard some of the Norwegian boats.
Always interested in his community, he was a proud life member of Branch #53 Royal Canadian Legion, Baddeck, Free Wheelers Club, Baddeck, South Haven Community Hall, Rural Crime Watch, Baddeck Home and School Asssociation, Board of Victoria County Memorial Hospital and Alderwood Home, Sea Cadets Instructor, and member of Ephraim Scott Presbyterian Church, South Haven.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Eveline (Dunbar); daughters, Mary, Emily (Dr. Angus) MacDonald; sons, David (Heather) and Kevin; sister, Barbara Matheson Crosby; sister-in-law, Helen and many neices, nephews, and cousins. Dad was proud of, and dearly loved, his four grandchildren, Mairead, Paris, France, Allan, Scotland, Maia and Matthew, Middleton.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Nelson; sisters, Janet (Buddy) MacLeod and Isabel (Donnie) MacDonald.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Monday, Jan. 9, 2012 at Ephraim Scott Church, South Haven, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with legion service at 7 p.m. Memorial service to be held Tuesday, Jan.10, at 2 p.m. at Ephraim Scott Church with Rev. Dr. Cameron Brett officiating. A reception will follow the service at South Haven Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of your choice.
The family wish to thank Dr. Genge, Dr. Chow, Dr. Ritter, and all the staff of Baddeck Hospital, Alderwood, Taigh Na Mara, Home Care and Home Support for their compassionate and competent care over the past years.
