Alfred George Brin
Following a very brief illness, Alfred passed away peacefully at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon on November 24, 2009 at the age of 88. Alfred was born January 29, 1921 on the family farm in the Coderre district of Saskatchewan, one of fourteen children of Rosilda and Charles Brin. The harsh realities of the Thirties on the Prairies forced Alfred to leave school at an early age to work for neighbouring farmers and, eventually in the sugar beet fields of southern Alberta. He was working at a meat-packing plant in Moose Jaw when Canada entered the Second World War. Alfred was one of eight brothers who volunteered to join the military, serving with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) and saw action between 1943 and 1946 in North Africa (attached to the British 8th Army), Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Like so many of his generation, Alfred’s wartime experience shaped the rest of his life. Discharged in early 1946, Alfred returned to Saskatchewan settling in Moose Jaw with his English war bride, Vera. There they raised two sons, Leon and Randy. Alfred eventually moved to Saskatoon, where he enjoyed a successful career in real estate, retiring in 1985. Alfred was a humble man who took pride in his roots and his family and in the successes of their lives. His infant sons, Lionel and George; his parents; his sisters, Cecile and Simone; his brothers, O’Neil, Merle, Archie, Eugene, Ovide, Adelard, Lawrence, Alphonse and Hubert predeceased him. Alfred is survived and remembered with love by sons, Leon (Jolyn) of Regina; and Randy of Coronach and Moose Jaw; grandchildren, Jody Diakow (Dale) of Winnipeg, MB, Danielle Millar (Duncan) of Port Coquitlam, BC and Jared Brin (Ashley Spires) of Saskatoon; great-grandchildren, Malcolm and Neala Brin, Erin Millar and Nicholas Diakow. Also surviving are Vera Brin of Moose Jaw; his brothers, Leonard (Anne) of Gravelbourg, SK and Edgar (Sandra) of Moose Jaw; sisters-in-law, Kathleen Young and Edna Brin; and many nieces and nephews throughout Canada. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, November 30th at 10:30 a.m. at the Moose Jaw Funeral Home (268 Mulberry Lane). Cremation Committal will follow at the Rosedale Cemetery.
