Gradus Petrus Smits, 89, a resident of the Cove Guest Home, passed away Monday, January 9, 2012.
Born in Giesbek, Holland, he was the son of the late Theodorus and Johanna (Arends) Smits.
Besides his avid gardening, for 24 years, Gradus was employed as the caretaker of St. Anthony Daniel Church, before retirement in 1987.
Surviving are his wife, Rhodena (MacDonald); daughters, Barbara (Louis) MacDonald, Sydney and Patricia (Darrell) Sutherland, Glace Bay; son, Graham (Cathy), Paisley, Ont.; half-sister, Lida Smits, Holland; half-brother, Jan Smits, Holland; 11 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews; special niece, Edna; special nephew, Jerry; sisters-in-law, Dini Smits and Thelma Pronk; brothers-in-law, Murray and Aubrey MacDonald.
Gradus was predeceased by his sister, Dora; brother, Petrus and half-brother, Wim.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Anthony Daniel Church on Saturday at 1 p.m., with Rev. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
