Vaughan, James Bernard “Bernie” - 90, Truro
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Bernard “Bernie” Vaughan on Monday, November 23, 2009 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late James and Mary (Lane) Vaughan. Bernie graduated from Saint Mary’s University with the Bachelor of Commerce degree. After working in his chosen career as an accountant for some time, he resigned in 1941 to join the military. In 1943 Bernie received his officer training and his travels over the next few years took him from Nova Scotia, to the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, the Defense Star as well as the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. After leaving the military, Bernie worked for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans as a District Protection Officer for Nova Scotia for over forty years. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and Knights of Columbus, a life member and past-president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, a member of the Truro Curling Club and an avid curler. Bernie enjoyed salmon fishing in the Miramichi and tying his own flys which he would give away. He is survived by his wife, Rita (MacNab); daughters, Elizabeth Vaughan, Truro, Anne Marie Gaetz, Truro, Margaret (Gary) Thompson, Medicine Hat, Alta.; grandchildren, Megan, Matthew, Allison, Elizabeth, Catherine; sisters, Mary Burke and Joan Coolen, both of Halifax; uncle, Phillip Vaughan, Halifax; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son, James and brother, Gerald. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 29th from 7-9 pm with a Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26 Tribute at 7:00 pm. in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, November 30 at 11:00 am in Immaculate Conception Church, 669 Prince Street, Truro with Father Joseph Thomas officiating. Spring interment in Robie Street Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in Bernie’s memory may be made to the Colchester East Hants Hospice Society.
