NEW GLASGOW – John Archibald Grant, age 93, of Brookside Ave., New Glasgow, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012 in the Aberdeen Hospital.
Born in Pine Tree, he was a son of the late Angus and Mary Ann (Chisholm) Grant.
He was a conductor with the C.N.R. retiring after 38 years. He began his working career as a quarrier with Stevenson’s Quarry. He joined the military in 1940 as a reservist. He was a member of Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 1667 where he was the oldest living Knight. He enjoyed bowling, darts and sailing and loved a game of 45’s, checkers and square dancing. He was an avid Montreal Canadiens fan.
He is survived by sons, Raymond (Linda), Churchville; Gregory, New Glasgow; daughters: Jean (Dale) Kidd, Halifax; Debbie (Philip) Bungay, Shad Bay; Cathy (Ned) D’Orsay, Lower Sackville; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Sr. Jean Grant, C.N.D., Sydney; a brother, Vincent, Pine Tree; special nephews, Donald and John James MacDonald.
He was predeceased by his wife Trudy (Ellsworth) Grant; sisters: Catherine Scully, Anna Armstrong, Mary Macdonald; brothers: Donald A. and Chisholm in infancy.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral mass 11 a.m. Wednesday in Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church with Father Gary MacPherson officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of choice.
Saint John’s CWL will meet at the funeral home at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday for prayers. Knights of Columbus Council 1667 will meet at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to conduct their service.
