Doris Olga Pieroway (nee Hann)
Stephenville
It is with great sadness that the family of Doris Olga (Hann) Pieroway announce her passing on Monday, January 23, 2012 at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital at the age of 92. Born in St. George’s, Olga was the daughter of the late Sidney and Rosanna Hann. She was also predeceased by her childhood friend and husband of 62 years Percy Pieroway, her brother Walter (in infancy) and special cousin Rose Payne of Port aux Basques. She leaves to mourn with many fond and precious memories her daughter Cathy and son-in-law David Travers of Bedford, Nova Scotia, sister-in-law Ina McLeod of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Olga started working at R.W. Pike in Port aux Basques at the age of 17. She spent two years in the sanatorium in St. John’s recovering from tuberculosis. She then worked in Corner Brook before moving to Stephenville to work at the American Air Force Base. She married Percy in 1947 and they settled into life in Stephenville. When Cathy was born Olga stayed at home to be a full time mom. In 1973 she went back to work as a secretary at the W.E. Cormack Academy, retiring in 1981. Mom was happiest in her home welcoming friends and family, sharing cups of tea and sweets and working on her next knitting or crocheting project. All who knew her loved her for her wit and sense of humor. She was a strong believer in the Guiding movement and a proud member of her Trefoil Guild “The Chickadees”. Olga’s friends were also her family. Betty and Junior Parsons and many others are considered members of our family and their kindness and friendship are treasured. Friends may call at Russell’s Funeral Home, 57 Prince Rupert Drive, Stephenville on Wednesday, January 25 from 7-9 p.m. A celebration of her life will take place on Thursday, January 26 at 2 p.m. at the United Church on St. Claire Avenue, Stephenville with Rev. Kathryn Eddy officiating. Cremation to follow. Internment will be on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Hillside Interfaith Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Association. Rest in Peace Mom.
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep,
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush,
Of quiet birds in circling flight,
I am the soft star-shine at night,
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
