Barbara McAllister

Passed on: January 24th, 2012

McALLISTER, BARBARA MARY - Barbara, better known as Andy to some, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2012 at the age of 94. She is survived by her children, George (Jean), Heather (Larry) and Charles; grandsons Andrew, Scott and Matthew; a niece, Shelly (Mark), and several other nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Nellie and Aretus Anderson; husband, George; daughter-in-law, Debbie; a sister, Jean; brothers Albert, Cedric and Clarence. Barbara was born and grew up in Sackville, NB., where she attended Mount Allison University. She worked for the Sackville Tribune and, later, the CBC in Halifax where she met her future husband, George. During their early years of married life, they lived in Vancouver, London and Saint John, eventually moving their young family to Fredericton where George became the Dean of Law at UNB. Barbara warmly welcomed many law students into their home during this period. Barbara valued family gatherings. She prepared many delicious meals for family, friends and acquaintances. If the McAllister tartan tablecloth was on the table, you knew it was a very special occasion. An enthusiastic gardener, it gave Barbara great pleasure to sit on the deck of her house on Spruce Terrace overlooking the large backyard of trees, shrubs and perennials she had planted over the years. Her book on bird identification and binoculars were never far away. Other interests included crafts, especially quilts; travel, music and dance. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and other staff members at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital and York Care Center for the attention she received.
Visitation will take place at McAdam's Funeral Home on Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 2:00pm to 4:30pm. A private memorial service for the family will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or a charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be made at www.mcadamsfh.com.
