Margaret Colleen (Bonnell) Baigent, 78, passed away peacefully at home in Halifax with her family at her bedside on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009.
Born in Westmount, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Agnes Bonnell.
Colleen will be remembered for her smile and loving kindness to others. She loved to have family and friends drop by for a cup of tea and some of her famous biscuits. She loved to bake and there were always cookies for her grandchildren.
She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband, Harry, her best friend and high school sweetheart. They married in 1952 and enjoyed 57 happy years together. Throughout their married life, they travelled the country with Harry’s work with the telephone company, living in Cape Breton, Montreal, Boulder, Colorado, Grand Prairie, AB, Keremeos, Kamloops and Invermere, BC, Ottawa and Halifax, retiring to Truro and later to Halifax. Colleen’s warm and generous spirit rewarded her with life-long friendships across Canada and the US. She especially looked forward to Christmas, which brought cards and news from each of them. Over the years, until health issues interfered, Colleen volunteered her time with many great causes, including hospital auxiliaries, the United Church, private nursing registry, the Lupus Society and the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
She was devoted to her family, always making their needs her priority.
Her family, friends and all of those whose lives she touched and enriched will lovingly and dearly miss her.
She is survived by her daughters, Diane Bainbridge (Glenn), Vancouver and Wendy Brunt (Rod), Halifax and her sons, David Baigent (Jenny) and Rick Baigent (Martha), both of Halifax. She adored her grandsons, Michael Bainbridge (Shauna), Sooke, BC, Nicholas (Pam), Vancouver, Adam Baigent, England, Kyle Baigent, Fredericton, Mark Baigent and Scott Baigent, Halifax; and her granddaughter, Lindsay Bainbridge (such a joy), Vancouver, as well as her great-grandsons, Connor and Logan Bainbridge, Sooke, BC. She is also survived by her sister, Anna MacGillivary (George); brothers, Owen (Anne), Aubrey, Roy (Fern), Donnie (Anne) Bonnell; and sister-in-law, Rose Bonnell, all of Sydney, Cape Breton.
She was predeceased by her brother, Harvey and sister-in-law, Edwina Bonnell.
She was very fond of her nephews and nieces, especially Nancy.
Colleen was eternally grateful for the excellent care and concern given to her from Dr. Geordie Richardson, her family physician. The family also extends their special thank you to Dr. Richardson, as well as Dr. Ross Leighton, LPN Joan Merrick, the VON, Rev. David Hann and all who made it possible for Colleen to remain at home with her husband and family during the last year of her declining health.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with funeral service held in Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 2 p.m., Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. A reception will be held following the service at the funeral home.
