Colin McLernon

Passed on: February 19th, 2012

McLERNON, COLIN FRASER - 1946-2012 - Colin passed away peacefully at his Florida home on February 19th after a courageous battle with ALS. He is survived by his wife, Gwen McLernon (nee Murray) and brothers John (Peggy), David (Pam) and Robert (Debby) and numerous cousins, nieces & nephews. Colin was a true entrepreneur and the Indiana Jones of our family. His early thinking regarding the potential of aquaculture led him to the Maritimes and resulted in ventures in Cape Breton, New Brunswick and the State of Maine. In the nineties, he moved to Indonesia to develop a gold mine. It was there that he found his true vocation when helping a friend create a state of the art technical school for local underprivileged youth. The school provided the leadership and skills to meet the needs of modern industry, while at the same time providing a better life and future for the students and their families. His last project in Honduras was his true joy. Working with his great friend Glenn Chamandy and his company Gildan, he created a school that has graduated 3500 students since its inception 6 years ago. A significant number already are working and advancing careers with major international companies. Colin continued to have his hand in the operation until his untimely death. His biggest regret was that he was unable to continue his work in other countries. Colin had a lifelong attraction to the sea. He loved fishing, golfing & the Montreal Racket Club and the camaraderie that went with them. Colin made friends easily and he developed great and lasting relationships throughout the world. He lived life to the fullest and he will be greatly missed. He was especially revered by his students whose futures and well being were constantly at the top of his mind. The family wishes to thank Hospice of Palm Beach County and the ALS Society, both of which were outstanding resources and help.
A memorial reception will be held in Montreal at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to your local ALS Society or to charities of your choice would be appreciated.
