Stan McPhee, a resident of Grand Lake Road, Sydney, passed away on Tuesday at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Reserve Mines, where he met his wife, Agnes, he was the son of Mary Frances (McPhee) and Michael McNamara. He attended St. Mary’s University and the Nova Scotia Technical College, where he received his degree in electrical engineering. He practiced for many years in Ontario, where he married Agnes and fathered his three sons. He returned to Cape Breton to work for AECL at the heavy water plant, and for N.S. Power at the Seaboard Generating Station where he became plant manager until his retirement in 1991.
Stan was an outstanding athlete, starring in hockey as a member of the N.S. Tech and St. Mary’s University teams, and playing semi-professional for the Bridgewater Senior team. He also excelled at football, baseball and rugby and was a long-standing member of the Lingan Golf Club.
Following retirement, Stan played four golf games a week and enjoyed a rousing game of cards at any opportunity, where he never let a card get “through the iron duke”.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Agnes (Rennie) and three sons, Stan, Halifax, Mickey (Simone), Reserve Mines and John (Patricia), Waterloo, Ont. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, upon whom he doted, Neil, Stephanie, Kyle, Liam, Sean, Mary, Jonah and Michael.
By request, there will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated by Rev. Daniel Boudreau on Friday, March 2, 11 a.m., at St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, where Stan was a member. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Curry’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay.

Stan died from complications associated with inclusion body myositis.
