BISHOP, Bernard William “Bill” - It is with great sadness that our family announces the peaceful passing of Bernard William “Bill” Bishop, in his 93rd year on February 24, 2012 at his home in Yarmouth.~~Bill was born on February 9, 1919 in Halifax, one of five children, and grew up on Wellington Street. He attended College Street School and joined the 16th Halifax Scout Troop, which would have a great affect on his later work with young people and humanitarianism in general. Although afflicted with polio as a child, Bill always kept up with the other boys and girls and tried many sports and activities that came his way. He also found he excelled at mathematics in school.~~He went on to study at Saint Mary’s College – precursor to the University – under the Irish Christian Brothers, and was awarded tuition scholarships. He graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting. While at St. Mary’s, he was also quite involved with the Canadian Officers Training Corps in Halifax.~~He joined the Nova Scotia accounting firm of Nightingale Hayman & Co., and met and later married Anne Camilla Campbell from Glace Bay in 1945. He was intensely devoted to Camilla, and they had 58 years of marriage together. Camilla died suddenly on February 24, 2004 – the same day eight years’ before Bill’s passing. He always credited his wife with supporting his career and efforts in charitable work in Yarmouth.~~Bill and Cam lived in Sydney and Halifax, but finally settled in Yarmouth in 1949, where he was the manager of the company’s branch office in that town. They had three children, Maureen (Bedford, N.H.), Gregory (Hong Kong) and Bruce (Yarmouth).~~ The accounting firm Bill joined in the 1940s was merged with a larger firm in the early 1970s, Thorne Riddell, and today it has morphed into the international accounting firm of KPMG.~~In the 1950s and 60s for a total of 14 years, Bill became the District Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of Canada in Nova Scotia. He also became a director of the N.S. Heart Foundation, accepting donations on its behalf in the Yarmouth region for many years. He was Chairman of the Canadian Red Cross’ Yarmouth Disaster Committee (and president of the Yarmouth Branch); a treasurer on the financial campaign for the YMCA’s Centennial Pool; a provincial appointee on the Yarmouth Regional Vocational School (now the Burridge Campus of the N.S. Community College); a financial advisor on the St. Ambrose Cathedral Parish Council and later financial advisor for the Roman Catholic Episcopol Corporation of Yarmouth, also for many years. He was a president of the local Rotary Club, and the financial advisor for Villa St Joseph du lac, a nursing home.~~Bill was awarded an FCA (Fellow of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia) in the early 1980s, and he retired from full-time work in 1984. In 2003, he was honored as a Knight of Saint Gregory by the Vatican, for his longtime humanitarian and philanthropic work with the Diocese of Yarmouth.~~Bill will be fondly remembered by his family and friends as a selfless soul who loved to laugh, and gave generously of his time and money to a variety of charitable organizations over the years.~~Bill was predeceased by his loving wife, Camilla; his parents, James T. and Susan (Walsh) Bishop; brothers, Ken, Harold and Ray.~~Besides his three children, he is also survived by son-in-law, Alan Freeman, Bedford, N.H.; sister, Marie, Halifax; grandchildren, Alison (Brendan) Jeffries, Saint John, N.B.; Joanna (Derrick) Pyke, Oakville, ON; Karen (Darren) Rousch, Calgary, AB; as well as five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia and Massachusetts.~~Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home & Crematorium, Yarmouth. Visitation took place on Wednesday, February 29 from 7-9 p.m. with prayers at 8:30. Funeral mass was held on Thursday, March 1 at 10 a.m. from Saint Ambrose Cathedral, Father John MacPherson officiated. Family flowers only, please. A memorial donation to the Yarmouth Food Bank Society (www.feednovascotia.ca) or the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia (www.cfns.ca) would be appreciated by the family.
