ELEANOR ISOBEL GIBBINS (nee French)

Born In: Canada

Passed in: Canada

ELEANOR ISOBEL GIBBINS (nee French) May 24, 1920 to April 17, 2007 Mom met her last challenge with a smile on her face, a tear in her eye, and her four children at her side. She left us to be with Dad shortly after surgery at Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops, on April 17th, 2007. She was born in Vernon, BC, the eldest of Stan and Jessie French's four children. Her father worked for the Ministry of Agriculture, and the family lived in Vernon, Cranbrook, Courtenay, Prince George and Penticton. It was in elementary school in Prince George that she met Ted Gibbins, who pursued her from that time until they were married in 1946. They lived in Vancouver until 1958, when they settled in North Vancouver, where they remained for 48 years, until Dad's passing in January 2006. Mom stayed in North Vancouver until February 2007 when she moved to Kamloops to be closer to her first great granddaughter, born in January 2007. Her last two months were spent happily at Berwick on the Park with her new friends and lots of family close by. She was the first female employee of the Royal Bank in Penticton during the war. She moved to Vancouver, attending and working at Pitman Business College. After Ted's return from the war, they married, and started their family. She continued working over the years in various bookkeeping and accounting positions. Retirement brought a continued busy life as she became heavily involved with volunteer activities, particularly with the Red Cross, where she was known for her baking and knitting baby afghans for countless bazaars. Her most important contribution was as a wife, mother, grandmother, and most recently, great-grandmother. Certainly her pride and joy were her grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by her two daughters, Judy (Al) Grimes, and Barbara (Larry) Schwitek in Kamloops, sons Ron (Judy) Gibbins (Victoria) and Bob (Katheryn) Gibbins (North Vancouver), as well as four grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Turner (Kamloops), Sara Gibbins (London, England), Kyle and Jessica Schwitek (Kamloops), and great-granddaughter Claire Turner. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Edna French (Penticton), brother-in-law George (Frankie) Gibbins (West Vancouver) and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews across Canada and in England. She will also be missed by special family friend, Carla Buchan (Kamloops). The family would like to thank her primary physicians, Dr. John LeBrun (North Vancouver) and Dr. Wayne Dong (Kamloops), as well as all the others who provided such outstanding care at Lions Gate Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital, Vancouver Eye Clinic and Royal Inland Hospital. Thanks also go to B.C. Ambulance, her North Vancouver friends, Burma Star members and the staff and her new friends at Berwick on the Park, who made her last two months so enjoyable. A memorial service will be held in Kamloops at Schoenings Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at 3:00 PM. Reception to follow. Should friends desire donations may be made in her name to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House, 72 S. Whiteshield Cres, Kamloops, BC, V2E 2S9, or the charity of your choice. Condolences may be made online at www.schoenings.com.
