Today God called our precious mother home.
It is with broken hearts and deep sadness that we, the children of Bertha MacMullan, announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mom into her eternal reward on March 8 at the Glace Bay Hospital at the age of 95 years.
Mom was a resident of Seaview Manor for the past two and a half years and she quickly made it her home and loved the care and attention given by the staff.
Mom was born in New Waterford to the late Eugene and Adele Chiasson and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by brothers Hubert, Arthur, Edward and Edmond.
Mom was a beautiful woman both inside and out and lived her life to the fullest. She enjoyed so many different pastimes in her life with her favorites being trips to the casino, playing 45s, bowling, travelling to Boston, Toronto and even California every summer for years. Mom was also very community minded, was a long time member of the St. Joseph’s Ladies Auxiliary, St. Anne’s Society and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels well into her 80s. She belonged to a women’s social club made up of very close friends who met every Thursday night for over 40 years. She was blessed with more friends in her lifetime than a person could wish for and this is a testament to the kind of person she was. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of calling her “friend”.
Mom was a devoted and loving wife to the late Donnie MacMullan and faced the challenges of being a widow at the age of 54 with grace, strength and dignity, but her greatest achievement in life was as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Her kindness, understanding and unconditional love will forever be missed by her children, Donnie, Linda (Sandy) MacDonald, Diane; grandchildren, Jimmy (Stacy), Jason (Keri), Lee and Kaelin; her pride and joy, great-grandson Anderson; several nieces, nephews and cousins who held a special place in her heart.
Mom lived a life of unwavering faith and she is resting peacefully in the arms of her Lord. We are so blessed as a family to have such a special angel watching over us for eternity.
Visitation will be on Monday, March 12, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 13 at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church. The Rev. Leo Boone will be officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Condolences may be e-mailed to the family at jmcurry@ns.sympatico.ca.
“You can shed tears that she is gone, or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her or you can be full of the love that she shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her only that she is gone or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, or you can do what she would want: Smile, open your eyes, Love and go on.”
