It is with heavy hearts that we the family of Olive MacPherson announce her peaceful passing on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at Taigh na Mara, Glace Bay.
Born in Birch Grove, May 24, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Mary Emma (Drover) Smith.
Before moving to Taigh na Mara, Olive was a longtime resident of Blackett Street, Glace Bay.
Olive was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was a woman of tremendous faith, extending her help to many. She loved to laugh and reminisce about growing up in Birch Grove and the time spent with her sisters with whom she shared a lifelong bond. Olive’s greatest joy was her son, John and her grandsons, Michael and Shawn.
A graduate of Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing in 1945, she worked most of her career at the general hospital until her retirement. Olive was a member of the General Hospital Alumni and St. Mary’s Senior Guild.
Olive is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, John ‘Clair’ MacPherson, Taigh na Mara, Glace Bay; son, John and his wife Janet, Glace Bay; and cherished grandsons, Michael and Shawn. Also surviving are sisters, Sadie, a resident of Seaview Manor, Gladys (Mrs. John Munroe), Muriel (Mrs. Brenton Peach), Rita (Mrs. Lloyd Layes), Lena (Mrs. Ron MacDonald), Shirley (Mrs. Tom Appleton); brother-in-law, Manning MacInnis, all of Glace Bay; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Ella (Mrs. Aulay MacLeod), Mary (Mrs. Donald Ferguson), Myrtle (Mrs. Manning MacInnis), brothers, Eugene and Kenneth.
Visitation for Olive MacPherson will be held today (Monday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will take place at St. Mary’s Anglican Church on Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Stacey Lemoine officiating. Burial in St. Mary’s Anglican Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Anglican Church, the Alzheimer’s Society or to a charity of choice.
