Fred Woodford, 77, of Forest Street, Glace Bay, passed away Monday, April 2, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Richard and Theresa (Maloney) Woodford.
Fred was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. He was employed at the Naval Base in Point Edward and later transferred to the Sydney Airport as a firefighter with the Ministry of Transport until his retirement in 1988.
Fred loved to organize family celebrations. He enjoyed travelling to Newfoundland, which was the birthplace of his parents. Fred was an avid Blue Jays fan and before the Blues Jays, like many Capers, he was a Boston Red Sox fan. He had an outgoing personality which enabled him to make many friends. Fred would also lend a helping hand to those in need. But mostly, he will be remembered as a compassionate and caring family man.
Fred is survived by his wife, Myrna (Turner) Woodford; sons, Raymond (Gail), Joseph (Joanne), both in London, Ont., Greg (Betty); one daughter, Anita (Michael) Danyluk, both in Glace Bay; two sisters, Agnes (Andrew) MacKinnon and Ann Dennis. Fred is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Steven, Andrea, Matthew, Madison, Rivera, Kristen, Katherine, Bradley, Amanda, Jennifer; one great-grandchild, Avalon and another great-grandchild expected.
He was predeceased by brothers, Roy, Artie, Jackie, Raymond and three sisters, Olga Parsons, Ehman and Rita.
Visitation will be held on Good Friday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, followed by interment in the parish cemetery, Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Reception will be held in the church foyer.
