We regret to announce the sudden death on April 10, 2012 of Tazuko MacKinnon, 68, of Antigonish, N.S.
Born in Yokohama, Japan, she was the daughter of Kuniharu and Tsurue Ide.
Tazuko earned degrees in arts and early childhood education and was a kindergarten teacher in Japan until she came to Canada in 1972.
She married, started a family and eventually continued her studies in education, after which she began working with children with special needs first at the Simon Fraser School for the Deaf, then at the Daycare for Preschool Special Needs Children in Sydney followed by the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board.
Following her retirement she focused her abundant energies on her family, her grandchildren and her community, acting as a Eucharistic minister, sacristan and active participant at the St. Francis Xavier University Chapel. She also volunteered with several organizations such as Festival Antigonish, Wellspring on the St. FX campus and lately at the R.K. MacDonald Guest Home.
Tazuko was always a giving neighbour, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a woman of faith and a selfless friend.
She is survived in Canada by her daughter, Natasha, Lochaber; son, Rodrick, Markham, Ont.; as well as her grandchildren, Peter, Alec, Michaela, Cameron, and Zachary, who will dearly miss their Mamma-chan; and in Japan by her brothers, Osamu, Isao, Yuzuru, Hitoshi, and Satoru and her sisters Kyoko, Hiroko, and Yutaka.
She was predeceased by her parents and husband, Roderick ‘Roddie’ MacKinnon.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday at the St. Francis Xavier University Chapel at 11 a.m. with Fr. Danny MacLennan presiding. Burial will take place on Tuesday in St. Michael's Cemetery following the 10 a.m. morning Mass in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave., New Waterford.
