NEW GLASGOW – Francis Craig, 85, of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully at home on April 12th after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Point Fortin, Trinidad, and also lived in Ecuador, England and Barbados before coming to Canada in 1945 to study at McGill University. He worked for CIL as a chemical engineer for 42 years, the last 31 years in the Explosives Research Laboratory near Beloeil, Quebec. After retirement, he and Margaret moved to New Glasgow, NS, in 1993 to be closer to family.
He is survived by Margaret, his wife of 57 years; seven children: David (Deborah), St. John's, NL; John (Heather), Calgary, AB; Peggy (Peter Bethune), Charlottetown, PEI; Liz (Henry Daigle), Peace River, AB; Pat (David Prince), New Glasgow, NS; Barb (David Brown), Milford, NS; Doug (Kerry), Winnipeg, MB; 17 grandchildren and four step-grandchildren; and a sister Mary, Montclair, NJ.
Family was very important to Dad, and he leaves us with fond memories of family camping trips, sailing, skiing, cycling and climbing Mt. St. Hilaire. He spent his high school years in Barbados and acquired a love for that island and for the sea. He loved to swim and was always ready to go body surfing. Church was also very important to Dad. He was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima Chapelry in Beloeil, Quebec, where he served as a warden, and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Stellarton, NS.
Visitation will take place 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, April 15th at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held Monday, April 16th, at 2 pm, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Stellarton, with Fr. Peter MacDonald officiating.
Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, or to a charity of your choice.
