He was born to Harriet and John Ferguson MacCallum on June 17, 1916, at Gull Lake. Predeceased by his father in 1968; brother, Jack, in 1969; mother in 1971; sister-in-law, Myrtle, in 2000; wife, Dorothy, in 1998, after 56 years of marriage; and sister-in law, Isabel Goodfellow, in 2007. Survived by his only son, Dennis Ian (Karen); and his only grandson, Bryan. He is also survived by Ian's extended family, step-daughters Tina Brezinski(Regan Milowski) and Shelley Gilbey( Brad and son, Nicholas). Ed grew up on his parents' ranch in the Duncairn District, 22 miles south-west of Swift Current and attended Silver Craig School. In 1938, he left home to take a job as a shepherd on the Kimber Ranch, north of Abbey In 1941, Ed left the ranch and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. Upon completion of his Air-crew training at Vulcan, Alberta, Ed married Dorothy Goodfellow, also from Duncaim, at Medicine Hat in November, 1942. He was then posted overseas to the 4-1-5 Bomber Squadron near the city of York, in the north part of England. From there, his crew flew bombing missions over Germany until the war ended in 1945. In a Halifax Bomber, Ed's position was that of mid-upper gunner. Ed was honourably discharged from the RCAF, with the rank of Flying Officer. He is remembered by Don Goranson of Weyburn, the only remaining member of the air crew. Ed was a member in good standing of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #56. Upon returning to Saskatchewan, Ed and Dorothy purchased what was known as the Colonel Yates Ranch, northeast of Swift Current. In June of 1946, their only child, Dennis Ian, was born. Ed excelled as a stockman and developed a large sheep-ranch. While in the sheep business, he owned and trained some very good working sheep-dogs and he competed in Sheep Dog Trials. Ed had a love for all animals, but especially for his dogs. Some positions that Ed held were on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers Assoc., and President of The Southern Sask. Wool Growers Assoc. In 1978, Ed was presented with the Scroll of Honour by The Saskatchewan Livestock Association for his contribution to the livestock industry. After retiring from ranching, Ed pursued a career in real-estate for over 20 years. His life-long passion was old-time fiddling, which took him to many competitions over the years. His crowning achievement was winning the Western Canadian Fiddling Championship. He played in bands such as "Don Hussey and the Melody Four" and "The Ramblers". In later years, Ed formed a group called The Silver Tones with long-time friends DeWayne and Eunice Leifson. They took this group to all the Senior Centers and the Wheatland Mall. Ed and Eunice entered many fiddling contests and won many awards. Following Dorothy's passing in 1998, Ed remained at his home in the city. For the last few years, he would visit the Prairie Pioneers Lodge two days a week for their Day Program. Ed entered the Lodge on a full-time basis in Sept., 2011. Ed lived a full and rewarding life with little or no health issues to the very end. He will be remembered for his incredible sense of humour, his wit, and his ability to make people laugh at his sometimes colourful comments. In the last few years when people would ask Ed how he was, his reply was," It's a long story. You will have to make an appointment!". Memorial donations may be made to the Prairie Pioneers Lodge Auxiliary, 302 Central Ave. South, Swift Current. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
