It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gerald William Best, 76, of Stanley Street, North Sydney, on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Rose Blanche, N.L., he was a son of the late John and Elsie (Knott) Best.
He worked as a stevedore with Marine Atlantic until his retirement. Gerald was a devoted member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church and the Royal Albert Masonic Lodge #19.
Gerald is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Florence (Bond) Best; daughters, Lana Best (Kenny), Florence, Valerie (Paul) MacDougall, Sydney Mines; sons, Gerald (Eileen) Best, Russell, Manitoba, Kevin (Darlene) Best, Sydney Mines, John (Kim) Best, Upper Sackville; seven grandchildren, Jesslyn, Tamika, Trevor, Steven, Todd, Christopher and Alyssa. Also surviving his one sister, Susie Melbourne, North Sydney; and several nieces and nephews.
Gerald was predeceased by one sister, Amelia (Millie) Brown, brothers, Thomas, Walter, Claude and John Best.
Visitation for Gerald will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A Masonic service will be held Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Saturday, in St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Gloria McClure-Fraser officiating. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or Nova Scotia Lung Association.
