It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Martin William A. Murphy on Thursday, April 19, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Martin was the son of the late Martin Murphy and Alice (Doyle) Murphy.
Martin graduated as a school teacher and taught in Sydney in the early 1950s. Martin worked for the Department of Highways in Baddeck and when he moved to Sydney drove for Briand’s Taxi.
Martin was a member of the Irish Benevolent Society of Sydney. He enjoyed fishing and especially his trips to Margaree to fish the brooks and enjoyed being with family, telling stories of the earlier years of family get-togethers.
Martin is survived by brothers and sisters, Dennis, Scotsburn, N.S., Kevin, New Glasgow, N.S., Hugh, Margaree, N.S., Ranold, Sydney, N.S., Eugene, Margaree, N.S., Alice Cormier, Margaree Forks, N.S., Bridget McKeough, Canso, N.S., Lillian Landsburg, Sydney, N.S., Carmel Timmons, Margaree Forks, N.S., Ursula Butler, Kingston, Ont., and Grace McNab, Ladysmith, B.C.
Martin was predeceased by his sisters, Catherine and Bernadette and brother, Patrick H. Murphy.
Visitation for the late Martin William A. Murphy will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Saturday, April 21, 2012, from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, April 22, at St. Patrick’s Church Hall, N.E. Margaree from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass to celebrate the life of Martin William A. Murphy will be held Monday, April 23 at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church with Fr. Douglas MacDonald officiating. Interment will take place in the parish cemetery.
Donations in memory of Martin may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
