The family of Michael Ralph Columbus is saddened to announce his sudden passing at the age of 66.
Mike was a native of New Waterford, N.S., a son of the late Hyman and Freda Columbus. He emigrated to Israel in 1974 and lived on Kibbutz Hamadia near Beit Shean.
He is survived by wife, Debbi; their three daughters, Ayala, Avital and Esti; his brother, Jack (Sharon) of Sydney; his sisters, Hinda (David) MacLean of Antigonish and Brenda (Kevin) Steiger of New Waterford; as well as nieces, Erin (Jason) Doyle and Lauren Columbus, Deanna (Mark Coombs) Steiger and nephews, Shaun (Melanie) MacLean, Damien (Amber Leahy) Steiger and Jeffrey (fiancee, Jody Murphy) Columbus.
Mike was active in community affairs as a young man in New Waterford, managed Hamburg’s Dry Goods and later Mike’s Clothing. He also worked at Schwartz of New Waterford for many years. He was a member of the Congregation Sons of Israel, Masonic Temple and a life member of the American Trapshooting Association.
He rose to the rank of sergeant-major in the Israel Defence Forces and was a member of Border Police.
A funeral service was held in Israel on Monday, Dec. 21, 2009.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
