Martin James MacIntyre, son of Mary and Angus, passed away peacefully on the morning of May 25, 2012 in the presence of his loving wife, Agnes and his children following a lengthy illness at the age of 84.
In addition to his wife Agnes, Marty is survived by three daughters, Linda, Katheryn (married to Warren Gordon), and Mary (married to Jean Paul Desaulniers) and his son, Duncan (married to Kelly Gale); five grandchildren, Marty MacIntyre, Courtney Desaulniers, Brean Desaulniers, Jordan MacIntyre and Austin MacIntyre; his brother, Duncan F. MacIntyre and sister, Kay O'Handley.
Marty was predeceased by sisters, Marcella, Mazie and Ann and by brothers, John and Donald. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews, the Delaney family and his many close friends.
Marty was well known across the province of Nova Scotia and particularly in Cape Breton for his decades of service as an educator, a community leader, a humanitarian and for his significant role in athletics as a player, coach and executive. His many and wide ranging contributions to the province of Nova Scotia and to the Cape Breton region were recognized with his appointment to the Hall of Honour by his alma mater St. Francis Xavier University in 2007 and by many civic and provincial awards of recognition over the decades.
Marty will be remembered by family and friends as a man of great integrity and honour. He taught and led by example and worked tirelessly on behalf of the church, his family, his students, and those less fortunate. In addition to its people he loved the beauty of Cape Breton and could often be seen sailing his sailboat on the Bras d’Or Lakes with his wife Agnes by his side.
Visitation for the late Mr. MacIntyre will take place on Sunday 7-9 p.m. and on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 775 George St., Sydney. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at St. Mary's Church, East Bay, Rev. Francis Abbass officiating, with interment in the parish cemetery.
