With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of our mother and grandmother, Grace Ellen Briggs, which took place at her home on Dec. 24, 2009. Mom lived her 87 years in her beloved Donkin.
Mom was employed at St. Josephs/Community Hospital from 1962 until her retirement in 1983 in the housekeeping department in the OR and later as a laboratory aide. Mom could always be counted on to do a ‘good days work’ whether it was at work or in her well kept and loving home.
She was born March 16, 1922, the daughter of the late Daniel and Bridget (McManus) McCann.
Predeceased in 1961 by her loving husband, Louis, mom was left to raise their children as a single parent. Her deep faith in god and her love for their children allowed her to overcome any and all odds that came her way.
Left to mourn are her daughter, Louise (Robert) Baxter and their children, Louis and Terri-Lynn; son, Terry (Sandra) and their children, Sarah (Chris) and Darren; and Cathy (Craig) MacInnis and their children, Evan and Alexandra. Survived by brother, John (Dorothy) McCann, Truro; sisters-in-law, Ada and Bridget McCann; and also survived by several nieces and nephews including best friend, Carmel and her husband Winston O’Leary.
Besides her parents and husband mom was also predeceased by her sisters, Mary, Florence, Catherine, and brothers, Willie, Peter, Arthur and Danny.
Mom was a devoted Christian and a lifelong member of St. Gregory’s parish, Donkin. In keeping with her wishes there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place, funeral arrangements are under the direction of Curry’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay.
