Florence passed away peacefully at CND McGillivary Guest Home on Dec. 27, 2009.
The last surviving member of her family, she was the daughter of Malcolm R. and Mary Jane (Severance) MacLeod.
Florence was born on Bentinck Street in the house she resided for most of her 90 years. From there she attended Central School and Sydney Academy. She was employed at MT&T as a switchboard operator, retiring as supervisor.
Florence was a lifelong member of St. Andrew’s United Church and was very active in both church and community. She initiated the first bridge at St. Andrew’s Hall. Her sense of style, fashion and decorating abilities added to many occasions. She was also a lifetime member UCW Unit 4. She loved children and volunteered at St. Andrew’s church program and later at the Children’s Training Centre for special needs children. She was also an Explorer leader at the church. She cared greatly for seniors and volunteered with the Friends of the Seniors, at New Dawn and on the Cove auxiliary. She also served on the Board of Howard House.
She also provided palliative care to her parents, neighbours and friends. Florence was a double mastectomy survivor from the early 1960s and spent many years counselling breast cancer patients. She also canvassed for numerous charities in the South End of Sydney.
She enjoyed her travels, which began with P.E.I. holidays and expanded to across Canada and parts of Europe. She also loved having simple picnics virtually anywhere on Cape Breton Island.
Florence will be remembered as a member of the Telephone Pioneers, the Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club (Friday night cards), and the Daughters of the Nile. Some will also recall fondly her performances with her father, Malcolm R. on The Cotter’s Saturday Night radio show on CJCB in the 1930s, which was heard across Canada.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, George C. Lohnes in 1996, her parents, a grandson, her brothers, Ballie, Florida, Melvin and Allister, Sydney, Rodger (Jean), Ottawa, her sister, Annie (Bob) Boutilier, Dartmouth, sister-in-law, Jean (Jack) McMillan, Truro.
She is survived by sons, Wayne (Nancy), Sydney, George (Valerie), Kentville; grandchildren Mark (Johnanne), Bedford, Paul, Heather of Sydney; great-grandchild, Grady, Bedford; sisters-in-law, Harriet MacLeod, Sydney, Dorothy MacLeod, Del Ray Beach, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
At her request, there will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30 to be conducted by Rev. Thomas Whent. Interment will be in the Hardwood Hill cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to charity of choice.
