The family regrets to announce the passing of Joseph Irving MacKinnon at Taigh Na Mara (Veteran’s Wing) on Dec. 28, 2009.
Born April 6, 1927, Joe was the eldest son of the late Michael Irving and Sadie (MacNeil) MacKinnon.
Joe was an early and long-serving employee of Dominion Stores in Sydney and was a proud union man, serving in several executive posts for the United Food and Commercial Workers.
A veteran of the Second World War and resident of New Waterford since then, Joe is survived by Annabelle, his wife of 62 years; and son, Ron (daughter-in-law Christine Harrison) of Guelph, Ont. He will also be remembered by his sister, Reynelda (Joey) Bruce and sisters-in-law, Joyce MacKinnon and Hilda MacKinnon; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbours and special friends, Dellie and Jean Young.
Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his brother, Raymond, sister-in-law, Tena Boudreau, brothers-in-law, Hughie and Donnie MacKinnon and parents-in-law, Neil A. and Florence MacKinnon.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, Dec. 31 at 10 a.m. at the Parish Church of Saint Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery at a later date. A reception will be held at St. Agnes Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford, immediately following the funeral mass.
