Bertha May Hauger was born on August 24, 1923 and passed away April 28, 2012 in her home town of Fort St. John, BC. Bertha was born on a farm 1 mile east of Dawson Creek, the fourth child of
pioneers Ed and Cora Hauger. Upon
graduation in Dawson Creek, she attended
Alberta College in Edmonton and then pursued a secretarial career in Pouce Coupe and Dawson Creek. She was known to bike 7 miles one way to work in Pouce Coupe. Bertha was a member of the Dawson Creek United Church, Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT), Young Peoples and the Rebeccah Lodge. She also completed leadership training in Naramata, BC. Bertha married Spencer Hadland on July 8, 1961 in Burnaby, BC and moved to the Hadland farm in Baldonnel. There she spent 30
happy years raising her family, tending the garden, canning, baking and helping on the farm. During this time she was an active member of the Woman’s Institute, a Brownie leader, and a faithful TOP’s and KOPS member. On many occasions she attended the Annual
Canadian Seed Growers Association Convention with Spenser. In 1991 Bertha and Spencer retired and moved to Fort St. John. They soon became “snowbirds” and enjoyed many winters in California and Arizona. Bertha’s life at home revolved around her family and friends. Many friends looked forward to a phone call or visit. She always lifted
people’s spirits, with her smile, remembering birthdays and consistently sending out cards and letters that kept her family connected.
Bertha is predeceased by her devoted husband Spencer, brothers
Lyman and Norman, sister Alice and grandson Curtis. She is survived by her sister Charlotte, daughter Joyce, son Edward, grandchildren Shelley, Daniel, Michael and Derek Hadland, Jeremy Carrigan and nephew Edgar Hauger.
The family would like to thank everyone for their kindness, support, prayers and visits. Special thanks to her caregivers, especially Jade, Leigh and Dr. Becky Temple.
