It is with sadness that we, the family, announce that Ellison ‘Robbie’ Campbell Robertson born Feb. 13, 1921 in Raynham, Mass., U.S.A., died on May 29, 2012, at the Camp Hill Veterans Home, where he was a resident for the past 22 months.
Son of Charles Hadden Robertson and Thelma Agnes (Isenor) Robertson, he moved as a boy to Great Village, N.S., then to Cape Breton where he resided in many communities in the industrial area, including the Northside and Sydney area.
Robbie served in the Cape Breton Highlanders from 1939 to 1945, being the last survivor of his original company of 1939.
He was a member and supporter of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 8 in Sydney Mines and branch 12 in Sydney.
He was the manager of the officer’s mess, Victoria Park, after the war and worked several others jobs before becoming a surveyor with the Department of Highways until he retired. Later he also worked in the Corp of Commissionaires.
Robbie was predeceased by his parents, brothers, Ian and Kenneth and a grandson, Ellison (Essen) Robertson.
He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Marion MacLennan Landry; sister, Jean Robertson; sons, Ellison (Marion), Toronto, Stuart (Karen), Sydney; daughters, Jane (Randy) Harnish, Herring Cove, and Cathy (Charles) Colville, Halifax; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, with another expected in the fall.
We will miss his good humour, stories and gentlemanly nature.
His family is grateful to the staff and volunteers of Camp Hill for their wonderful and loving care.
A memorial is planned for later in the summer.
