KRAUSE (Willi) 1909 - 2008 Willi Krause passed away on February 10, 2008 at 98 years of age. A long-time prominent resident of Trail, B.C. and a renowned track and field coach, he spent his last years at the German Canadian Care Home in Vancouver. Willi was predeceased by his wife Eva in 2005, also a former resident of the same care home and by his siblings in Germany, Lucy, Kaethe and Kurt. He is survived by his daughter Christa Farenholtz (Alf), his son Axel Krause (Anita), grandchildren Maury Farenholtz (Karen), Aubry Farenholtz (Kathy), Bronwyn Krause, Jason Leane, Oksana and Galya Krause and great-grandchildren Joshua and Neisha Farenholtz. Willi was born in Pasewalk, Germany, the oldest of four children of Hedwig and Franz Krause. He immigrated to Canada in 1958, followed by his wife and children in 1959, where he took up residence in Trail. While working in the community at various jobs, his passion was coaching talented track and field athletes in the West Kootenay city. Under his coaching his athletes became well known on provincial, national and Olympic levels. Willi's contributions in this area, including his efforts in having a field-house constructed in Trail, have been recognized by the City of Trail through a Citizen-of-the-Year award as well as granting him status of Freeman-of-the-City. On a provincial scale, he was inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall-of-Fame in June 1982. He received wide recognition from many organizations and all levels of Government including the Golden Jubilee Medal on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It is indeed a tribute to Willi that he dedicated 60 years of his life to the sport of track and field in both Germany and Canada. Following his productive years in the Trail community, where he also enjoyed beekeeping, gardening and renovating his home, he and Eva moved to the German/Canadian Care Home in Vancouver in June 2000. The family would like to offer a special thank-you to the staff of the Home who made Willi's final days as comfortable as possible. A celebration of Willi's life and interment of his ashes will be held in Trail this coming Spring. A subsequent notice of the venue will be published at a later date
