SHIRLEY ANNE BIRKELAND There is another angel high above today, as our lovely and cherished Wife, Mother and Grandmother and friend passed away peacefully at Kamloops on February 25th at the age of 79 years. Mom will be forever missed and is survived by husband Ole, son Ole Jr. (Paddy), grandchildren Sarah, Kiel and Nick, son Gary (ex-wife Rossella), grandchildren Marissa and Cullen. Her beautiful "Chelsea" will be sniffing at her bedroom door to come in and watch over her, just as he did through the nights of the past months. Mom will certainly miss good friends, especially Enrico and Laura. Shirley was predeceased by her father J. D. (Douglas) Turner and mother Caroline Elliott Turner. Born in Kamloops in 1928 in December ...an early Christmas present, Shirley lived in the family home on 5th Avenue, the 'large white house next to the Creamery'. Kamloops was a much smaller place then and the Turners were very well known. Mom was so very close to her beloved Dad, a railroad conductor and talented boat builder with Nova Scotia roots, and in his day, there were many of his prized 'Clinker' boats on the waters of local lakes. One in particular stood out ...named 'the Shirley-Anne' with the letters boldly on the bow of the boat. As a young lady, Mom was high-spirited and full of fun. With her dark wavy hair and turquoise-blue eyes, she was so lovely. She held positions with the Hudson's Bay Company and B.C. Hydro before marrying Ole, who was the love of her life. They married in 1954 and raised their sons in Kamloops. Mom was the rock, heart and soul of our family and there could not have been a more loved and selfless Mom, who always took care of her husband and 'her boys'. She enjoyed golfing, bowling in earlier days, and was an avid gardener. Mom's sons probably tested her patience even more than we know but she always laughed it all off and took it in stride from the men in the house. Her job was being Mom and wife and she did it perfectly. To the end, she was so strong, concerned more about others, and an example to us of what goodness is. We will all miss her so much to the end of our days and never forget the memories of wonderful times with Mom. Her journey ended too soon, but we cherish the years we had. Somewhere up above, she may now be helping pound in the tiny nails or steaming the wood for the next clinker boat with her Dad. Most likely, she is just waiting patiently for when Ole and 'her boys' will someday join her again. Bye for now Mom.... Love is from the heart and through the eyes, and those beautiful blue eyes will see us all again. Should friends desire, a donation to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice Home would be much appreciated. In the spring, a memorial for Mom will be held for family and friends. Arrangements entrusted to Kamloops Funeral Home, but no service by request
