We the family are saddened to announce the passing of our brother, uncle and friend, Charles A. Whitty, on Dec. 29, 2009, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born on Sept. 5, 1925, in Ingonish, C.B., he was the son of the late John T. Whitty and Bridget (Hines) Whitty.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Church, Ingonish, as well as the Parish Church of Saint Leonard, New Waterford. Charles was a life-long fisherman in Ingonish, and during the winter months a carpenter in the lumber yards in Mira. He enjoyed playing cards, driving his scooter around town and visiting friends who always enjoyed his home made cooking and baking treats.
Charles is survived by brothers, Adrian (Patsy), Ingonish, John (Claudia), Port Hawkesbury, Scott, Sydney; sisters, Lena MacNeil, New Waterford, Ellen Marie, Port Felix, Canso County; many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Gertrude and Mary Whitty. He will also be missed by his very special friends, Freddy Milley, Donnie and Mary MacDonald.
He was predeceased by both his parents, sister, Theresa, brothers, Albert and Godfrey, and brothers-in-law, Frank MacNeil, Tom Pellerine and Emerson Ross; nephews, Bobby and Gary MacNeil and Kevin and Glenn Whitty.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass will be held Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at 11 a.m. in St. Peters Church, Ingonish, with Fr. Dan MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in St. Peters Cemetery, Ingonish, with a reception to follow at St. Peters Hall, Ingonish Beach.
Donations in Charles’ memory may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
