Captain Reid Merriam battled his last storm on June 13, 2012 at Northside General Hospital,
He was born in Spencer's Island, N.S. and later moved to Bathurst, N.B.
Reid's entire life was on the sea following in the footsteps of many generations of Merriams. Upon retirement, he was employed with Marine Atlantic as Master. His legacy will continue through his four boys as each has chosen a career on the sea. Besides being Master Mariner he was also a Master Gardener. He was seen by many during his daily 10 km walk with his faithful companion ‘Fluffy’.
He was a loving and devoted husband and father to Mary (Foley) and four boys, Vincent, N.B.; Peter (Melissa), Quebec; twins, Patrick and Daniel, Marine Institute, St. John's Nfld. He is a leaving behind brother, Captain Kin Merriam (Deanna), P.E.I.; sisters, Mary (Jim), Ont.; Sylvia, Ont.; mother-in-law, Hannah Foley, Nfld.; brothers-in-law, James (Rose) Foley, Nfld.; sister-in-law, Pauline Foley; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Alexandra and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ray and Gertrude (Dunbar) Merriam; brother, Paul; sister, Mildred and brothers-in-law, Don, Ron and Joe and sister-in-law, Betty. He will be sadly missed and remain in our hearts forever.
Visitation for the late Captain Merriam will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret's Church, Grand Mira South with Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating.
