MOWBRAY, R. M. (Bob), PhD.– Passed peacefully away in Harbour View Haven, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on December 26th, 2009. Born in Ayr, Scotland August 7, 1924 this orator, wit, musician, author, sailor, woodworker, university administrator and academic leaves his family and friends with many happy memories and much sadness at his passing. With Janet, his best friend and wife of almost 60 years, Bob travelled the world, making special friends in Scotland, Australia, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Together they raised Catriona (Rob) Maloney, Graham (Lynn), Joan and Anne (Ron) Chisholm. Bob’s grandchildren Elsbeth, Gwen, Devon, Jimmy, Matthew, Lindsay, Stephan, Thomas and Morgan and great-grandchildren Eirinn, Brody, David, Mary-Jane and Sarah were lucky to know him, to hear his stories, to listen to his music or just enjoy an ice-cream and chat with him after the dinner table was cleared. His brother Bill (Betty) and sister Helen never let him forget his strong Scottish roots and having been a wing forward playing for Ayr, Bob became Mahone Bay’s most ardent Scottish rugby fan and a great purveyor of haggis on Burns’ Night. During the Second World War, Bob flew as a navigator with the Royal Air Force and was involved with testing experimental radar systems. After the war, he studied at the University of Glasgow where he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology and started his long academic career which spanned appointments at universities in Manchester, Glasgow, Melbourne and finally at Memorial University of Newfoundland. At Memorial he held several positions including Associate Dean of Medicine and Deputy Public Orator. One of his fondest memories as a university orator was singing “We’ve met again” to Vera Lynn. In St. John's he was an enthusiastic member of the Stokers Rotary group and also served on the Janeway Children's Hospital Board. In addition to his many academic papers and several textbooks, he wrote a novel, “Harness and Hatches Secure”, that reflected some of his wartime experiences. Bob was ever grateful for the love and support of Janet. He led a full life and left us all the richer for it. Arrangements are under the care of Mahone Funeral Home, Mahone Bay (902) 624-8241.
