The death of Alexander ‘Sonny’ Hermack, of Saint John, husband of Veronica (MacDonald) Hermack, occurred on Jan. 1, 2010, at his residence.
Born in Glace Bay, N.S., March 31, 1930, he was a son of the late Fred and Mary (Tomiczek) Hermack.
Sonny served with the Queen’s Own Rifles as a peacemaker in Korea. He was employed as a mechanic for Canadian Tire in Toronto before moving back to Glace Bay to work in the coal mines for many years before his retirement.
Besides his wife, Veronica, of 51 years; he is survived by his son, Keith (Yolanda) of Grand Bay-Westfield, N.B.; brother, Frederick (Alice) of Dorset, Ont.; sister, Mary Turnbull (Billy) of Glace Bay; grandchildren, Samantha, Brandon and Ryan; as well as several nieces and nephews, and his special companion, his dog, Pippin.
Sonny was predeceased by his brother, Stephen and his sister, Frances.
He will be resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, 506-634-7424, with visiting Monday from 7-9 p.m.. A Royal Canadian Legion service will take place Monday evening at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at St. Pius X Church, Somerset Street, at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick.
