EDWIN JONES Edwin Jones was born in Montreal, Quebec on February 27, 1923. He was the eldest of two sons. As a baby he was dedicated to serve the Lord so it wasn't surprising that during his high school he became active in an Inter School Christian Fellowship group. This group had a major influence in the direction of his life. Following high school, Edwin spent a year at Toronto Bible College before joining the Air Force in 1943. He was posted first to Edmonton where his church involvement led to meeting Mae Wescott who later became his wife. He also made some other major life decisions - choosing to attend Wheaton College and join the Sudan Interior Mission. Edwin and Mae, with their only son, Ray, Sailed for Africa in March, 1950. They spent three 5 year terms in Ethiopia broken up by a year of furlough in Canada between terms. When Ethiopia closed to missionary work, Edwin and Mae moved to Ghana for their final term. During his years in Ethiopia and Ghana, Edwin filled a variety of roles, his favourite being Bible Teaching. In 1984, SIM Canada gave Edwin an appointment as Travel Coordinator in their Toronto office. In 1990, following retirement, Edwin and Mae moved to Kamloops to be close to their son, Ray, his wife Josie and their granddaughters, Rebecca and Rachael. Six years of good health offered Edwin the opportunity to do a variety of volunteer work and extensive travel. Since trains were one of Edwin's passions, he especially enjoyed his volunteer work driving the train for the Kamloops Wildlife Park, and for two consecutive years, he and Mae spent a month of unlimited travel on Amtrak, the U.S. passenger rail network. Even after he was diagnosed with cancer, Edwin maintained his independence and remained active in his church until he could no longer walk without support. Many times Edwin expressed deep appreciation for the faithful support of his church family. He also valued the care that Dr. Krueger and Dr. Just gave him as well as the staff on 3 West, when he needed hospitalization, the Home Support workers who looked after him when he was able to be at hone, and Hospice House staff who cared for him during his stay there. Edwin went to be with the Lord on May 22, 2008. A Memorial Service will be held at the Free Methodist Centennial Chapel, 975 Windbreak Street on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to SIM Canada in memory of Edwin.
