In Loving Memory of Yuriko Deshima It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Yuriko Deshima (nee Kato) on the 29th of June 2008 at the age of 86. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1992 and sister Sumi in 2008. Yuriko is survived by her daughter Karen (Greg), son Gil (Barb), son-in-law Mike Pope, grandchildren Greg (Geri), Lyndsy, Vanessa, Alysa and great grandchild Brittany, brothers Spud (Marg), Stan (Kaz), Barry (Anna); sisters Emi (Kaney), Mits (Arnie), Fran (Tosh), Marion (Joe), Barb (John) and Nancy (Marv), brother-in-law Tom, cousins Frank, Tom (Mary), Gordon (Edna), Marie (Grant) and Larry (Laura), nieces, nephews and many friends. Yuriko was born in Union Bay in 1922 and married John in 1943. After the war, they moved to Hamilton where Karen and Gil were born. In 1954 they rejoined the Kato family in Kamloops. She and John moved to Vancouver in 1990. During her 36 years in Kamloops she was very active in the Japanese community volunteering countless hours. She started out working as a farm worker, house keeper and then worked for the Kamloops Residential School and the United Church from where she retired. She was a tireless worker, and outstanding Japanese cook and a great organizer. We will miss her smiles and her humour. Special thanks to Northcrest Care Centre and the Delta Hospice Society and all that supported her. A Memorial Service will be held for Yuriko on the 19th of July 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Kamloops Buddhist Church, 361 Poplar Street. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer Association or the Delta Hospice Society
