Beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away at the Northside General Hospital, Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, surrounded by his loving family.
John was the son of the late James and Gertrude (Boutlier) Gear.
He was a member of the Wilson United Church.
He was a decorated veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas.
He worked as a coal miner for 47 years.
He is survived by his three daughters, Shirley (Norbert) Murphy, Mahone Bay, Doris Clarkson, Florence, Marilyn (Richard) Lochan, Calgary; sons, Douglas (Teresa) Gear, Calgary, Percy, Margaree; three sisters, Edna Marks, Pauline Gear, Gertie Slade; brother, James (Lois) Gear; 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by his wife, Ella Grace and son, Johnny.
John was called ‘a family man’ — a man who spent his time with family enjoying camping, the summers in Middle River and Margaree, where he had a summer home and numerous friends. He was also an avid fisherman who loved to spend time on the river. He will be greatly missed.
Visitation wil be held in Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, Wednesday, Jan. 6, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Wilson United Church, Florence, Norma Mills officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.
