LITTLE HARBOUR – George Frederick Forbes, passed away at his home in Little Harbour, Pictou Co., on Wednesday, January 6, 2010.
Born in Little Harbour on December 23, 1912, he was the eldest and last surviving son of the late Fred and Marguerite (Anderson) Forbes.
George spent most of his life farming and belonged to many farm organizations. He loved working the land and was never happier than when ploughing a field. He and Margaret operated Forbes’ Campground for eight years where they met many wonderful people. He was a life-long active member of Little Harbour Presbyterian Church and at his death, the oldest member. George was past Noble Grand and past Grand Master of Norton Lodge IOOF and of Mount Horeb Encampment. At the present, he belonged to Moore Lodge in Thorburn and Cushing Encampment in Westville. He belonged to various church and community organizations and was one of the founding members of the Little Harbour Volunteer Fire Department. He loved visitors at his home and often entertained them by talking about the history of the family and the community. He greatly enjoyed the many trips that he and Margaret made to Florida and the friends they made there.
George is survived by his wife, Margaret; son, John George (Janet); daughter, Carol-Anne (Del) Crowell; and by five grandchildren: Michael and David Forbes; Elizabeth (Steve) Cormier; Todd and Jillian Crowell. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and brothers: Arthur, John Lloyd, David and Billie.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow, where visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. Funeral service will be held in Little Harbour Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Joanne Vines officiating. Interment in Church Brook Cemetery immediately following the service.
To remember George best, be kind to others and take time to enjoy the people you love.
The family will host a reception in the John Lloyd Forbes Church Hall following the interment.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of George to the Pictou County VON or Palliative Care Society, Aberdeen Hospital would be appreciated by his family.
